Our Mission

The PaluWise concept
PaluWise is pioneering the development of groundbreaking solutions for the sustainable and productive use of rewetted degraded peatland ecosystems. Recognising the critical role these ecosystems play in climate regulation and biodiversity, our project focuses on transforming degraded organic soils into thriving paludiculture landscapes. Through four strategically located, large-scale demonstration sites in Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom, PaluWise is showcasing and validating best practices and cutting-edge solutions for successful paludiculture implementation.
Bridging research and action

WP1 – Characterising the potential for paludiculture in EU: Rewettability
WP2 – Multi-actor Paludiculture Demonstrations
WP2’s overall objective is related to the advance knowledge in paludiculture production by ensuring the effectiveness of the value chains and stakeholder involvement. This includes:
1) implementing and operating four 50-hectare (ha) sites, focusing on substantial biomass production and efficient harvesting;
2) analysis of current practices and value-chains to identify areas for improvements;
3) monitoring key performance variables while standardising data collection and using Earth Observation to the greatest extent;
4) systematically assess farm-level practical barriers and enablers within paludiculture schemes;
5) develop guidelines for paludiculture planning and management.
WP3 – Paludiculture carbon balance
WP3’s overall objective is to determine the net impacts of a comprehensive range of paludiculture interventions on the carbon and greenhouse gas balance of European peatlands.
WP4 – Environmental impact, synergies & trade-offs of paludiculture (up to the landscape scale)
WP5 – Policy, finance, socio-economic enablers to upscaling paludiculture
WP6 – Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation (CDE)
WP6’s overall objective is to implement, monitor and adjust a CDE strategy and plan for tangible and effective impact. It will:
1) Design and define a comprehensive strategy and activities compliant with the multi actor approach and ensure successful engagement of key actors;
2) Develop effective and novel communication and dissemination materials,
channels and activities;
3) Monitor all activities, oversee KPIs and fine tune materials and activities to maximise impact and results/information uptake;
4) Implement and develop a tailored exploitation strategy for maximum results uptake for successful up-scale of paludiculture.
WP7 – Project coordination & administration
WP7’s overall objective is to ensure PaluWise’s successful, timely, ethical, sustainable and impactful scientific coordination and project management, implementation and administration. Specific objectives are to: ensure the fair, efficient and sustainable governance of the project; oversee high-quality R&I and administer and report on the project; manage research results and other outputs as openly available as possible, according to FAIR principles.
